48. Work

I walk home.
Down the street.
Back toward Walkabout.
I peer in.
Through the door.
It’s a still place.
Dark.
Men.
Still.
Leaning.
Sittin
Supping.
Girls. Women. Older, mostly.
Make up.
Thick.
Black.
Mascara.
Liner.
Lashes.
Lipstick.
I peer in the doorway.
A girl smiles.
Waves me in.
I smile back.
No, I say, shaking my head.
She comes to the door.
With another girl.
Two.

Why don’t you come in?

I’m not looking for a girl.

Why not?

I’m a missionary.
You love Jesus?

She asks me.

Yeah, I goes.

I can’t believe it.
She asks me.
Turns out they’re sisters, the two girls.
One speaks English , so I’m able to explain.

I can help, if you want, find a job.

How? she asks.

NGO, I goes. You can train for a job…a new career.

We exchange numbers.
On the way home I thank God for the conversation.
Maybe that was why I was here.
Right…
God had given me a job to do:
Not even 3 months in Cambodia and already He’d given me work to do…
My first assignment for The LORD.
Now….what NGOs in Cambodia help girls to escape the sex trade…?
