6. God the Almighty

Anyway, I say…
I’m not being arrogant. I mean it sincerely.
You think you have the power to put me in jail?
Its probably a bit stupid, considering they’ve planted a gram of crystal meth on me and could raid my room and arrest me at any moment…
I serve God, I say.
If God wants me in jail, I will go to jail. If God doesn’t want me in jail I will not go to jail. It’s up to God.
The motor bike taxi drivers look at me like I’m crazy.
I’m speaking in Khmer to anyone who will listen.
If you arrest me and lock me up for 10 years it’s because God wants me in jail to reach out to the lost and broken there, I say.
I’m reminded of Paul’s words in his letter to the church at Philippi, which he wrote from jail:

I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me will really serve to advance the gospel… I am in chains for Christ.

I can’t lose, I say.
If you arrest me, and put me in jail, it’s because that’s where God wants me to be…
And it’s just another great chapter for my book.
(The book I’m going to write about my journey as a missionary into sex work land Cambodia – as a warning to other young men who want to serve Jesus in the same way as me – combatting sex trafficking.)
But, if God wants me out here with you, working with the elephants, then that’s where I’ll be. Either way I am free, because my freedom comes from being in Christ, sure of my eternal destiny!
I laugh.
I’m high.
High on meth or high on the Holy Spirit?
I turn and look at the father of the disfigured little girl, who’s standing behind me.
His eyes beam down with love to me…
I turn back to the street crowd, listening… taxi drivers, cops, street sellers…
I can’t lose, I say again. Either way I’m free. If you’re going to arrest me, I’m ready. What’s it to be?
Do I spend the next 5 years reaching out to my lost and broken brothers in Prey Sar prison…
Or do I stay out here with you, working with the magic elephants?
Whichever it is – I’m ready for the next chapter of my story!
Am I crazy?!!
